Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Are all my friends included in the area of my Promote Your Space LazerList?

A: We can't guarantee that everyone in an area that should be included on a list actually will be on a list, but the vast majority of people will be found. One reason for people not showing up is if they have set their profile to private, or if they have set their age outside the searchable parameters. If they can be found through the MySpace Browse search, then they should be included on the list we provide.

Q: Do you offer refunds?

A: If you are not satisfied with Promote Your Space lists for any reason, you will be granteed a full refund within 7 days of purchase.

Q: What is the best way to refine the list? Should I try to be as selective as possible, or is it best to be broader so I don't miss potential fans?

A: I designed Promote Your Space to give you the control you need for your own particular situation. You may feel you are in a small market and need to market to a broader range of tastes to reach a large enough audience. Or you may be in a large city and feel that it's best to target a smaller percentage of the potential fanbase and get a higher percentage return. That said, I think it's best to target where you think a high percentage will be intested in your music. My strategy is normally to require 2 out of 3 genres in the search. That normally brings up bands that fall closely within the genre you are promoting.

Q: My band is hard to categorize. Why can't I choose a genre outside of my band's stated genres on MySpace?

A: Many artists either feel they are hard to categorize and or that they don't want to be pidgeon-holed. However, you have to look at it from the perspective of your potential fans. Figuring out who would be in your potential audience is a very first important step in finding those people, and those people already have established tastes in music. They want to know that what you are doing somehow fits into what they know they already like, and they first thing they'll look for is your genre information on your profile.

You can only get a list of people who like your genre of music for two reasons. First, I want Promote your Space to promote targeting audiences instead of using a buckshot method of promotion, and Second, I want LazerLists to be worth as much to the people receiving your friend requests as they are to the bands sending them out.

Q: I want to get more genres.

A: Currently, you cannot order lists for genres other than your own band. After the initial launch stage of the Lazerlists however, you will be able to order lists for any band's genres, even if it is not your own band. This means that clubs, managers, and other promoters will be able to order for their artists or artists they are considering representing.

Q: Why must I "Finalize" a list?

A: When you are ready to see and use the fans on a list, you must "Finalize" your list. Finalizing a list means that you cannot cull, or refine, a list anymore. At that point, all of your choices for deciding which band's friends to include or exclude from the list are over. This is done because Promote Your Space is very processor intensive on the database and server, and locking in the list like this is a way I can help speed up the site until I see just how much server power is going to be needed. I plan to have an option in the near future where people can spin off another list from each list, so that you don't have to order a completely new list if you want to refine it in two or more different ways. Just let me know if that is an important feature you'd like to have implemented.

Q: I've got a pre-prepared order that has 3 genres, but I don't want to buy all 3. Can I just purchase 1 or 2?

A: You can change the genres for the order by clicking on the "purchase" or "buy" button either on the Refine List page or the Your Orders page. This will take you to the Confirm Order page, and then you can click on the "Change Genres" button on that page. Choose your genres by command-clicking on Mac or option-clicking on PC to select and deselect genres from the selection list.

Q: When will you have X City or Y Town ready open for orders?

A: I'll let you know when new areas are opened for orders.

Q: Can you guarantee that I won't get my account deleted by MySpace if I use your lists?

A: PromoteYourSpace is not affiliated with MySpace in any way, and cannot look into a crystal ball to know what MySpace may or may not do in every case. The best advice is to use caution when doing any promotional campaign on MySpace, especially if it involves sending mail messages. It is safest to never use your main band account to send any kind of duplicate mail, whether by adder bot or by hand, to more than even a couple of people. Even if the messages are to your own friends. MySpace duplicate mail filters are not very forgiving, and there have been reports of people having their account frozen after only 4 or 5 mail messages that are exactly the same.

Q: Can I use PromoteYourSpace Lazerlists with adder bot programs like Badder Adder and Eek! Adder?

A: You can use PYS LazerLists with any adder program that allows you to import a text file of MySpace friendIDs for use in the program. Most popular bots do allow this. If you use Eek! Adder, you must convert the .txt file extension to Eek's formatted .els extension. This is easy to do. Simply open the .txt file you export from PromoteYourSpace in Notepad. Then save the file with the name "myfile.els" - save it WITH the quotes. This will override Notepad's default .txt extension.

Q: Help. I forgot my login name or password!

A: If you try to log in and it says "No User Name" or "Wrong Password" click on the "Forgot Login or Forgot Password" link. You can then put in your email address, and it will send your login information to the email you signed up with. Since all passwords are encrypted in the system, and cannot be retrieved by even a system admin, it will generate a new password for you. You can then change that to something you'll remember by clicking "Edit Your Account Info" on your customer page once you log in.

Q: I have a Mac and most friend adders seem to require you to run Parallels. Do I need to purchase extra software to run your program on my Mac?

A: Promote Your Space is web based software - it runs on our server, not your own host machine like most friend adders, so it is compatible with any Mac or PC. It is compatible with friend adders, however it is really a friend FINDER, not a friend ADDER. With friend adders, you are limited to the tools that MySpace gives you to look for people who would be interested in your music - you either browse by area or get them from another band's friend list. Neither one of these options are very good for show promotion because you are wasting over 90% of your friend requests on either people who are not in the area of the show or people who wouldn't like your kind of music. This gets people upset and frustrated by "band spam". When you order a Promote Your Space LazerList, you are getting a list of people who are assured to be both in the area of your show AND also friends with bands similar to yours. You can use this list however you would like - it's yours to keep. Since you know they would probably be interested in your music, you can personalize a note to them and say, "Hey, I saw you were friends with BandX and BandY, check us out. We're playing next week at club Z and we'd love to see you out there." This personalized approach itself is at least 10 times more effective than a generic "Hey what's up - add us" kind of message that most bands use to get friends. So combining Promote Your Space LazerLists with a personalized mailing campaign is 10X10 times (100X!) more effective than using a friend adder. That means if you used an adder to send out 400 friend requests a day, it would be about as effective as sending 4 personalized messages to people on your LazerList.

Q: Does this program cost money every time I use it or is it a one time fee to use the service like most adders?

A: Any LazerList you purchase is your to keep and use however you wish to forever. Practically speaking, the nature of the lists mean that the longer you wait to use them the more out of date they will become. After a month or so, you can't say with confidence that they are still friends with those bands, etc. Also, other people probably should be on your list in the meanwhile, and you'll want to know about those people also. Since Promote Your Space is brand new and a lot goes into creating lists for an area, I haven't decided how often I will be able to update the lists, or how much it will cost to update a list. I will let everyone who orders know when updated lists are available.
